Thanks to Nancy Musser for passing along an article from The Press of Atlantic City that says Ocean City’s iconic, pink Chatterbox restaurant is up for sale. Marie Repici, its 82-year-old owner, understandably has had enough. Its estimated value is a little less than $1 million if you would like to pick up a unique memento of our high school years.
According to the article, the Chatterbox originally opened across the street in 1937 by Jean Campbell, who in 1944 moved it to its present location on the corner of 9th and Central. She sold it in 1968 and it was sold again in 1972 to Marie. She ran it with her husband until he died in 1986, then with her son until he died in 2009. The stress from Hurricane Sandy that required $400,000 in renovations was the last straw for Marie who has homes in Ocean City, Florida, and Belize.
“Who needs stress at my age? I’m off to Belize!” she may have thought, but did not say.
