Selfies

I kept coming across the term “selfie” that was somehow connected to the narcissism of the new generation.  But what could it be?

Google to the rescue!  A selfie is photo taken of oneself, usually with a camera, tablet, or smartphone  held out at arms length.  I only have a camera, but it is too heavy and does not focus close enough for a selfie.

Selfies started out as photos taken in a mirror, and a self-photo taken with a computer webcam would technically qualify, but a photo taken with an out-stretched hand is what is typically meant.  Photos taken in a boardwalk photo booth are borderline selfies.

Young people insist selfies are not narcissistic at all, but are just a requirement of modern life on the Internet.  I must admit I had to generate an ersatz selfie for the “About” section of this blog, taken with my webcam.
